Tall striker Lee Young-jun (21) is challenging the European stage through the Swiss league.
Grasshopper Club Zurich announced on the 30th (Korean time), “We have acquired Lee Young-jun, a central striker from Suwon FC in the K-League,” and “the contract period is until 2028.”
He continued, “He has also gained experience on the international stage, having played for the Korean national teams under 19 (U-19), under 20 (U-20), and under 23 (U-23).” He explained, “He has good physique based on his tall height (192 cm).”
The club expressed its expectations, saying, “Lee Young-jun is a player who fits the team perfectly. He is a young player with a lot of potential, and his skills have already been proven.”
Lee Young-jun said through the club, “I am happy to join the team. Europe will be a completely new challenge for me.”
Born in 2003, Lee Young-jun made his K-League debut in 2021 at the age of 17 for Suwon FC.
Lee Young-jun, who enlisted in Gimcheon Sangmu in January of last year to resolve his military service issue early, has consistently scored goals in major international competitions while serving in the military, catching the attention of fans.
Last May and June, he was called up by Suwon FC coach Kim Eun-joong, who was leading the U-20 national team, and participated in the 한국을 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring two goals and showing his presence as a next-generation star striker.
Then, in May, he caught the eye of Daejeon Hana Citizen coach Hwang Seon-hong, who was leading the U-23 national team at the time, and participated in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup.
At the time, he scored 3 goals and was ranked 2nd in the tournament’s scoring rankings, but Hwang Seon-hong was eliminated in the quarterfinals, so he did not advance to the Olympic stage.
Lee Young-jun, who was discharged from Sangmu, Gimcheon on the 15th, resolved his military service issues at a young age and took on the challenge of playing on an overseas stage.
