This is the fourth edition of the Winter Youth Olympics, and the first being held outside Europe.
Korea’s You Young won the women’s single gold medal at the 2020 Winter Youth Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Kim is the first Korean man to reach the top of the figure skating podium at the youth event.
Adam Hagara of Slovakia won the silver medal with 216.23 points overall, followed by Yanhao Li of New Zealand with 208.84 points.
Jacob Sanchez of the United States had the top short program score with 76.38 points but he only managed the sixth-best score in free skate with 123.90 points, which relegated him to fourth overall at 200.28 points.
Kim executed a clean quadruple toe loop to begin his free skate, and then landed a flawless triple axel.
He followed that with a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination.
Kim Hyun-gyeom continued his mistake-free performance with a triple flip and a flying camel spin.
He then capped off his memorable program with a well-executed flying change foot combination spin, drawing a thunderous ovation from the packed house.
This was Korea’s fifth gold medal of the two-week competition, which concludes Thursday.
